The 2030 Agenda implicitly recognizes that the current global development model is unsustainable and that a transformation is required to achieve the desired sustainability. One of the most powerful tools to accelerate this transformation from the public sector is sustainable public procurement.
What would happen if States begin to obtain goods and services that generate positive impacts on society and the planet? What are we buying? How is it produced? Who are we buying from? States must use their purchasing power to drive the growth of new production models and promote sustainable development.
Today we launch the Sustainable Public Procurement Group, a peer advisory group to promote sustainable public procurement in local governments, which seeks to:
Position the triple impact economy agenda at the local level.
Promote concrete actions of sustainable public purchases and contracting.
Inspire towards new forms of public-private contracts.
Generate community among leaders and local public officials who have sustainable development within the strategic agenda for their cities and nurture it with the perspective of the private sector and civil society.
Generate installed capacity in public administration and a history of collaborative work for the development of the triple impact economy agenda in cities with a focus on sustainable public procurement and contracting.
Today more than 30 people from different teams from 5 different cities were present, enriching themselves with the exchange and networking. Teams from the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, Rosario, Córdoba, Mendoza and Bogotá, Colombia were present.
